General Troubleshooting

Helpful Links:

The links below go to Apple's support documentation for general problem solving. A simple power off, reset, or re-install can solve many issues.

Resetting your Device:

Reset the iPhone by holding the sleep/wake button at the top right of the device and the home button at the bottom center of the face at the same time. Hold them both until you see the screen go black and the white Apple logo appear. When this happens, you can let go - the iPhone is rebooting.

Resetting the iPhone should not remove or delete any data or settings.

Shutting Down, and Relaunching an App :

Shutting down and relaunching an app can sometimes help solve certain problems. To shut-down and app that is running in the background follow these steps:

  1. Double click the home button on iPhone (either its iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS working on iOS4)
  2. The interface will slide up and reveal a second dock-like set of app icons "in the background".
  3. Now to stop the background app, just tap and hold the app until the icons begin to jiggle,
  4. then tap the minus symbol (-) at the top left corner.
  5. The app will then disappear, "deleted" from the background dock (but not from your iPhone or iPod).
  6. Relaunch the app from your home screen

Sending Us Crash Logs:

If your app is crashing, we would like to find out why. To do so, we will need certain information from you. After the app crashes, it creates a crash report on your device. To send us your crash report, take the following steps:

  1. Sync your iPhone to iTunes.
  2. Find the crash logs on your computer. Here is where they are located:
    • Mac OS X :~\ Library\ Logs\ CrashReporter\ MobileDevice\ DEVICE_NAME
    • Windows XP:C:\ Documents and Settings\ USERNAME \ Application Data\ Apple computer\ Logs\ CrashReporter\ DEVICE_NAME
    • Windows Vista:C:\Users\ USERNAME\ AppData\ Roaming\ Apple computer\ Logs\ CrashReporter\ MobileDevice\ DEVICE_NAME

The log file names start with application name and have the extension crash. The logs themselves are just text files, so you can open them in your text editor and cut and paste, or (preferably) attach them to an email. Which brings us to the next step.

  3. Send us an email at support@simpletouchsoftware.com with any details you can remember about when it happened, what you were doing at the time of the crash, what you saw, etc. Do not forget to attach the crash reports you found above!
